TOO R&D: Phasic sheilding
Phasic shielding
In an attempt to duplicate a jedi ability that came to the attention of the Alderaanian guard scientist a new project was enacted.
Through working with the Observer Jedi Vonta Horn they studied the jedi ability to ‘Phase shift’. In this act of the force the user defies several physical laws by passing entirely through solid matter.
Upon examination the scientists discover that this feat is done by phasing part of the users molecules from this phase of reality into another. Allowing the being to pass their molecules through solid matter.
Initial scans indicate that the ability may ship said user slightly into hyperspace. Although there was no indication of hyper-spatial energies, the very act of passing through an object could not have been phasing to another plane other then hyperspace? The team could thing of no better explanation.
Utilizing several theories involving the passage of a body through hyperspace they devised a modified hyper drive system that projected several layers of hyperspace fields. It was hoped that this would phase part of the ship out of this plane and into hyperspace, using competing hyper-spatial fields to destabilize the molecules in question.
With several attempts they found that they just could not destabilize a solid body safely. Each attempt resulting in the warping of the matter being used for the test, along with the generator itself, or a total destabilization of the molecular cohesion causing the ship to shift completely into hyper space.
Several attempts were made to use data collected from hyper portal travel to correct the problem. Trying to use the stationary aspect of the Hyper portals as a blue print to create a stabilized system. But those attempts also failed. They succeeded in designing a significantly smaller version of the device that used less power the original proto type but the problems remained.
Then on a day in witch they were using a probe to analyze the effects from inside the fields they found that they could get no readings from the probe when there were only two opposing fields. On further inspection they were astounded to find that a limited use of only two of the opposing fields that they were attempting to generate bent all forms of the electro-magnetic spectrum around the field.
The very act of trying to shift matter partly into hyperspace between two fields created a pocket of warped space between the opposing shields cuased EM radiation from all bandwidths to bend around the field leavin the contents untouched.
They had accidentally discovered a new form of radiation shielding. The converse nature of just two of these modified hyperspace fields bent all forms of radiation harmlessly around a vessel.
The device was now so small and took up so little space that it could be modified to be a third type of radiation shielding on even the smallest of vessels with only the normal energy drains expected from ray shielding.
On a draw back it did limit all forms of communication and scanning using electromagnetic waves but the advantages of such a device far out weighed that small issue.
With the shield the guard could explore areas of space that were otherwise to be avoided because of the issue of radiation poisoning to crew and radiation damage to ships.
As is often the case, from a great scientific failure, came a break through of monumental proportions.
