Explanations
Phalanx Anti-Missile Point Defence Gatling Laser Network & Phalanx Anti-Missile Point Defence Fire Shield
The Phalanx, is made up of a network of small, turreted light blaster cannons. These weapons are very able to pick out missiles and destroy them from long range. The second portion of the system, designed to destroy any remaining missiles, releases a series of small explosions just outside the shields of a vessel. These explosions cause enemy warheads to detonate prematurely, doing minimal damage to the vessel. Combined, these countermeasures reduced volleys of 500 missiles to roughly 10% of their full damage capacity.
Reactive Shielding
Reactive shielding is a system designed to protect the Messiah from energy weapons. When the vessel’s shields are raised, a special battery bank is charged along with them. Then, when computers detect a substantial bombardment against any section of the vessel, the shield is immediately recharged with stored energy from this bank.
Multi Track Shielding
Multi Track Shielding uses a dedicated targeting computer imbedded in the shielding system to track approaching enemies and calculate approximate damage. The system automatically them distributes shields for maximum damage resistance. Combined with reactive shielding, this system gives the ship an unprecedented edge in battle.
EMP Pulse Emitter
A modification of standard ION cannon technology, the EMP Pulse Emitter is designed to disrupt enemy systems for a brief period of time during naval engaments. While a standard ion cannon can shut down all systems and requires a total restart to undo, the EMP simply disrupts information flow, requiring that users manually reset systems. Because of the weapon's nature, it works best on more sophisticated systems (simple systems, i.e. life support, is not overtly effected by the weapon because the ammount of data interuption possible is much less). Targetting and navigation systems, therefor, are the hardest hit by this weapon, though even these can be manually reset within minutes by able users. The EMP Pulse Emitter has a range similar to that of an ION cannon, though it has a much broader stroke, emitting "pulses" of energy in a forward and flat arc of 90 degrees. The emitters are located in the nose of the Thorne.
Sensor Stealth Suite
A system to camoflauge the vessel from detection, the suite makes use of technology developed for the Star Avenger Tactical Assault Platforms and other Imperial ships. The XP-32 'Illusion' sensor stealth unit confuses enemy sensors, making it more difficult for them to attain a targetting lock and reducing sycnhronized fire. A layer of chameleon armour makes the vessel almost invisible against the backdrop of deep space.
Background Information
Developed in secret by the Imperial Department of Research and Development, the Thorne Class Dreadnaught was designed to fill the gap in the Imperial navy between the light Fire Class Frigates and larger Victory and Eternal Class Star Destroyers.
More specifically, however, the vessel was designed to form the backbone of an Imperial skirmish line. Designed for high speed and able to bring all of her weapons emplacements to bear on a single target, the Thorne is deadiest as part of a first-engagement line.
The entire length of the vessel is a cone, with weapons placed in circular patterns in rings around the ship for maximum coverage. The engines are mounted at the ship's rear.
Manouvering jets allow the ship to spin easily on its axis and change direction in mid-flight, making it the most manouverable capital ship of its size in the galaxy.
The ship's hull is smooth, with the bridge inlaid near the stern and invisible to the eye - one would have to know the ship's exact specifications to target the bridge on purpose.
Lightly crewed, exceptionally swift and well armed for its size, and with the ability to bring all of its firepower to bare on a single target, the Thorne is deemed a "capital ship killer" by the Imperial High Command, and is expected to begin showing up in Imperial lines in only a few months.
