Description:
The Protector class gunship is designed to be the first line of defense for Imperial capital ships against the hostile threats of enemy starfighters and missile threats. The ship is armed with an array of long, medium, and short range weapons for this purpose. The first set of weapons are the warhead launchers, which would fire torpedoes or missiles at enemy starfighters from long range. Then comes the Firestorm weapons, which would engage the starfighters at medium range, while at last, the point defence autocannons and ion cannon would engage the missiles and starfighters at short range. The ion cannon mounted aboard the gunship is different from normal cannons in that instead of firing a compact ion bolt which would expand and fizzle out over time, the cannon fires a expanded bolt that expands even more before rapidly dissipating. The purpose of this is that due to the high impossibilty of achieving a head on or even near miss hit of an enemy missile, the cannon can just be fired in the general direction of the warhead and the shot could still disable the onboard navigation and detonation systems, turning it into a dud.
The ship features an advanced communications array which links it to the onboard targeting and analyzing computers of all nearby warships, from which information is immediatley downlinked into the advanced targeting computers of the Protector it's self. From this information the Protector assigns it's armament as needed in order to eliminate the threats that are coming against the Imperial fleet.
In addition to the weapons systems the Protector has an average propulsion system for it's size and good manueverability, along with nominal shields and hull to protect it's self. The ship carries no starfighters or shuttles, but does have some escape pods to allow the crew to evacuate if necessary. A small security detail is assigned to the ship, and the picket does have a self-destruct system to use if necessary.
