Description:

The Fanator class Assault Gunboat is designed as a successor to the Intrepid Gunship in the Imperial ranks as a new generation of Imperial picket type vessels. The ship appears to be an almost perfect ovid when not in combat, it's weaponry retracted, it's sublight engines smoothed out to blend in with the hull when powered down. The ship is painted black also to help it blend in with space. A normal sensor scan would reveal the presence of the vessel, but to the naked eyes when not in combat the ship would be very hard to spot against the back drop of space.

The vessel has a limited crew capacity, and if embarking a full load of passengers, can be very cramped for both the crews and the passengers. The ship embarks a standard amount of troops to act as boarder repellers and a security force in the case a spy, saboteur, or traitor should leap into action or be discovered and dealt with. To prevent capture the ship has a very simple self destruct method, as will be described farther on down.

The ship is powered by four banks of high capacity energy batteries, and can either be recharged by deployable solar sails, or can be linked via a high capacity electric cable to the reactor of another ship nearby. In any case the energy batteries have a very high output capacity and can last for a very long time before they need to be re-charged. This preferred method of propulsion power will also mean that while in battle, should an enemy bolt penetrate to the batteries, they will merely stop working instead of going critical like a reactor core would. The only time they would cause a catastrophic explosion is if they were deliberatley set to go off from a self destruct command, which would be activated by a crew evacuating the ship or possibly by a saboteur. In either case the batteries provide high energy to the engines, which in conjunction with the shape of the vessel allows a high sublight speed to be attained. In addition in atmosphere the ship can reach about half of the speed attainable in space. Finally, a standard hyperdrive is also embarked.

The ship is built to withstand engagements with anything up to the medium cruiser category when confronting enemy fleets. Due to the circular smooth nature of the vessel, the shields are naturally stronger when protecting a ship of this kind and shape then when they would be when otherwise protecting a dagger or otherwise cluttered ship. The shields are of the Novaldex brand and in addition have a dual capacity to protect their vessel. The first capacity is their normal deployment, which offers a single strong barrier to repel most types of weaponry. The second is a triple layer effect that divides the shield into three layers, providing protection against the particle cannons and other high penetration warhead weapons. The first layer sports shields of 250 SBD, the second 500 SBD, and the third 1250 SBD. Finally, the hull protection is non-standard Titanium armour, non-standard in that several layers of rubberized vinyl are wrapped around inside the armour, acting as a sheath to all of the electronics inside of the ship, drastically reducing the effects of ion cannon bolts.

The armament is dual roled, and is mainly designed for combating small ships, such as starfighters, shuttles, and other picket sized vessels. A single dual turbolaser cannon is mounted in order to give it some punch against enemy picket ships and larger vessels, but the cannon is of a heavy rating, meaning it can cause as much damage as a heavy cannon would, but it also has a vrey slow rate of fire. It's rate of fire is also slower than such a normal weapon would have. In addition to the turbolaser, the ship mounts four of the firestorm quad laser cannons for use against enemy starfighters, with rapid reflex mounts and a high rate of fire allowing the cannons to quickly dispose of enemy starfighters and shuttles alike. Finally, the ship mounts four proton torpedo launchers, of the starfighter grade, designed for use against enemy starfighters, shuttles, and capital ships. Two are bow mounted, and two are rear mounted, with the rear ones intended for shaking off pursuit of any enemies on the vessel.

Finally, the vessel doesn't not embarked any starfighters in it's hangar bays, namely because it doesn't have any hangar bays. The vessel does mounted two rows of escape pods, below the vessel, each pod being capable of carrying ten people to safetly in event the vessel would be lost.
