The Machina
You are viewing an old version of this page.
(Yes, I know you're wondering why, but its an entire race of droids. I think that merits an R&D to give others an idea of how they work.)
The Machina are droids who survived a biological holocaust on their homeworld of Evoro, watching their creators die from a horrific biological weapon. They were the lone remainder of intelligence on the world and it was through the actions of Asimov, the new Prime Designate of the Machina Praxis. It was through severe design modification and working with programming that Asimov and more skilled technical droids developed a number of new droid variants. From this four specific models were created though all originated from the initial model referred to as the Citizen model. From this and all models come some uniform technologies influenced and often initially created by the Evorons before they were wiped out. Since then the Machina have begun to improve upon their designs, creating a society based around their own interests and growing technological knowledge as they attempt to evolve beyond their original design schemes.
The Citizen is the most basic droid model which all Machina initally start out as once created in an Birthing Foundry. While in the Foundry the new droids are educated in society and moral thought along with the ideal of democracy as most knowledge they have will be acquired via information downloads while these importants concepts are taught so as to stress them to the free droids. A Citizen multi-purpose droid chasis can serve any number of jobs, including menial labor and they form the bulk of the growing government bureacracy. However, if a Citizen shows a enjoyment for some sort of vocation such as the Military, Technical Work, or Heavy Labor then they are able to be upgraded into a new droid model that will suit their pursuits much better. However, upon being upgraded, they must go through training to adjust to their new bodies and duties before being put into full time operation. There have been whispered rumors on the Interlink that further upgrades will become available as time goes by with more research, but these base four are the foundations of Machina society. Citizens in general are the dominant model all over Machina Prime even as reclamation continues.
Birthing Foundries produce them as population is required though Asimov stresses the need to educate them carefully which has been done so. Citizens more often then not operate in the urban centers of Machina settlements and cities though their design can operate in a number of extreme environments including the vacuum of space. This becomes very important as the Machina look towards establishing orbital facilities though they prefer to operate in a atmosphere. Not only are Citizens produced from Birthing Foundries, they are also in charge of them which ensures that no defects occur within the newly built droids due to close observation. After their release from the foundry and recieve housing they are free to operate in the society as they like and customize their bodies as they see fit for their occupation and tastes. However if they choose a more demanding vocation they must request Upgrade status which is reviewed carefully by the Upgrade Commission who judges the droid's aptitudes.
The Technician is for Machina who wish to specialize entirely in the field robotics, gel-eletronics, and other more delicate fields such as designing new droid variants and upgrades besides major maintanence tasks. Technicians are the savants of Machina society, working tirelessly to improve the mechanical species under the guidance of the Science Designate and Asimov whose ideals are what guide their research projects. Technicians are also responsible for making repairs on their fellow droids and ensuring nothing happens that could harm them. However Technicians are also studying what they refer to as primitive electronics such as the circuitry and systems used by the droids of rest of the galaxy with slight fascination of rumors of nanotechnology being used by the Black Dragon Empire. To be upgraded into a Technician means passing a rigorous aptitude test in basic gel-electronic knowledge and maintanence since every Technician must know how to recover a gel-core from a damaged droid to preserve its sentient mind even if the body is destroyed.
Gel-core recovery is crucial and some Technicans specialize specfically in that as the Machina have begun to encounter the occasional freak accicent in which a droid is damaged severely. If the gel-core is lost, the droid is considered dead as its personality has been obliterated, leaving only a hust behind. Due to this Technicians are highly valued but heavily tested to ensure top quality as no one wishes to hear of the destruction of a fellow Machina's core.
Technicians though are also employed just about in any facility due to their usefulness though the Machina Security Forces have begun employing some for special weapons projects involving electronic warfare. Overall, Technicians are the mechanics, doctors, scientists, and repairmen of Machina society which they rise to meet as most Technicians come from Machina who crave a challenge. Like almost all Machina, Technicians can fuction in a number of extreme environments and still serve their purpose.
Industrial Workers are, as is obvious from their names in charge of the growing heavy industry of Machina Prime as well as any further industrial projects that the Machina Praxis considers carrying out. Machina that upgrade to this model tend to enjoy hard work and labor as it is something to do and keep themselves busy even while their minds may be elsewhere in the vast Interlink that connects all Machina together giving them a permanent sense of community. Industrial Workers have heavily augments chasis designed to withstand the kind of stress one might experience in any number of industrial activites, whether it be extreme temperatures, chemical or radiation exposure, or even being slammed into by some rogue heavy item. Industrial Workers generally are seen in any place where heavy lifting or strenuous work is needed.
Industrial Workers though must not only perform their jobs effectively but with precision since a missing or misplaced piece of equipment could be disaster in certain situations. Industrial Workers also are one of only two base models that have an armored gel-core since they are in much more dangerous conditions at times, especially around smelters and construction equipment. They also sport the heavist lifting capacity, comparable to the primitive and notoriously stupid Binary Loadlifters of the known galaxy since most Machina models have only above average strength compared to organics. Industrial Worker bodies are also equipped with an array of industrial and construciton based tools which they can gain access to on command. Thus Industrial Workers are the builders of Machina society as that is precisely what they do on a number of different levels.
Soldiers are Machina who desire to defend their species as the realization occurs to a great many of the droids that their society could be threatened by outworlders. Machina who seek to upgrade to a Soldier must go through rigorous training while still in their Citizen chasis until they either graduate training of their chasis breaks down. Soldier chasis are notably dangerous for their capacity to generate energy blade from their forearm emitters as well as projectings weapons fire from a pair of rapid fire pulse blasters, one in each arm. However, since the Machina have the recorded history of their Makers at their disposable, they are aware that war requires adaptability. As such, the Soldier chasis is heavily modifiable to permit them to operate in any number of environments or situations and allowing the droids to specialize in a number of fields include recon, heavy weapons, demolitions, anti-personel, anti-vehicle, siege, and a number of other wartime roles.
Soldiers are also all equipped with a repulsor system in their back and legs, making them extremely mobile and agile on the field of battle when combined with a highly powerful gyroscopic system installed in them. This gives the Machina a highly mobile basic combat force though Citizen models have been considered for use in the deployment of vehicles as a Soldier is too broad and strongly built. Soldiers are the second base model to have an armor reinforced gel-core to protect their personality from damage if their body is destroyed. This means that if the Machina eventually enter into combat, they will be able to retrieve some of their fallen, giving them access to even more battle hardened individuals.
All of this is combined in a chasis covered in a surprisingly light polymer armor made to take energy weapons fire though shrapnel can penetrate it like most combat armor used by organics. The real difference is that a damaged Soldier will keep fighting even if missing limbs while injured organics require medical attention. Repairs can be done post battle or in battle if a soldier is a trained Technician which one generally is in most squads if possible. Currently Soldiers act as the police force of Machina Prime though if war shoulder ever come Upgrade facitlies stand ready to convert any willing into Soldier models to defend their kind.
All Machina are equipped with several specific technologies created orignally by their Evoron creators but now modified and improved upon by the Machina themselves as a new society.
Gel-Cores/Gel-electronics:
Almost all droids in the galaxy have some form of central processing unit which function as their brain. Most droids in the galaxy have this in some form of hardwire circuit based system. Their bodies are filled with circuitry that is susceptible to ion energy and electromagnetic pulses. The Machina are different in that they utilize a unique form of electrical conduction with a special gel system that flow through their bodies. This is referred to as gel-conduction and appears to be able to generate signals powerful and constant enough to give the Machina a more fluid motion to their movements where as most droids still jerk in their motions. Combined with this is the fact that while a great deal of droids do develop personalities and emotions but get memory wiped, Machina have experienced having them it for generations. The Evoron did not like the ideal of memory wipes as they viewed it as erasing a soul, though they did place programming restrictions which the Machina had to remove.
Gel-cores, due to their nature, also cause the Machina to often be a more adaptive species but also emotional on a more organic level than most droids who tend to exaggerate the emotions they have which can generate highly irriating personalities at times. This also increases the processing power of the Machina, putting them on par with an organic brain which is a very powerful computer itself when not distracted. A gel-core is very much the container of everything a Machina is; their personality, memories, thoughts, and emotions. Thus wiping a Machina's gel-core constitutes as murder in their society and they tend to do what they can to preserve them since a surviving gel-core can be placed in a new chasis. This is not so much a resurrection as giving a living sould a body to function again.
Another unique trait of gel-cores is that they are run off chemical energy as the gel flow itself creates a chemical reaction that generates electrical energy which the Machina run off of. Because of this a Machina does not require recharging as their body movement is constantly charging the gel by causing a perpetual flow. However all Machina do require a rest cycle of about five hours a day to allow their bodies to perform system checks, flow maintanence, and to bleed of excess energy. Machina can function round the clock but the gel-core will overload after three days of this as it will be recieving excess energy it cannot remove without the rest cycle. A shortfall perhaps but it also means the Machina do not fear a major power outage in their settlements which could cripple the droids of other races if it were long term. This also means a gel-core on its own is self suffient until plugged into a body or system of some sort since the core is itself constantly flowing form the Machina's thought processes.
Gel-electronics, which entirely dominate Machina society, are immune to damage from electromagetic pulses since their system acts more like an organic nervous system than a circuit board though obviously still artificial. Ion weaponry will still affect them but in a more crippling fashion than complete deactivation since a Machina will initiate restart protocols the moment they've been affected. This slows their reaction time until all systems are fully operational again, which is about a five minute window. More expansive systems like ships and buildings would require an ion bomb or repeated ion fire to even cause a hiccup which is standard within most of galactic society.
The Interlink:
Machina society is defined by its capactiy to communicate as every Machina is through their gel-core and a chasis of some sort linked into a massive network. This is not a group mind of any form as all Machina are individuals. Rather the Interlink is a race spanning information network that all Machina access for data and communication. It also surprisingly serves as a means of government as the Interlink itself is the means by which all Machina cast their votes in societal decisions which are then carried out by their government, the Machina Praxis.
The Machina are very pround of their system and of the ability to be in contact with one another. Most Machina are always at least partially tuned into the Interlink listening to the buzz and flow of its information as they go about their daily tasks. The system is protected thankfully to its reliance on gel-core technology which no other species has access to, inhibiting their ability to hack it and cause havoc should such a perverse idea cross the minds of some individual or group. Along with this, Machina are a very communal species as they are always in contact with one another, making them very personable to organics which is a throwback to their formerly subserviant nature.
However the Interlink also serves another surprising purpose as it is a method of energy transmission. All Machina buildings are powered by this transmitted energy flow from their power plants and relay towers though it is gaining growing interest in other scientific circles in Machina research projects which has lead to theorization that if they can discover the correct mathematics, matter could be sent through the Interlink as well by converting it into a form of energy and reconverting upon arrival back to matter. For now though this is only theory and as the Interlink continues to spread across Machina Prime as its droid population grows.
The only real concern is maintainig it so that the Machina can continue to vote and maintain what they refer to as absolute democracy since every member of their society has a vote to cast on an issue. Power transmission is also important to ensure portions of society are not hampered by sudden outages though these are very rare thanks to careful monitoring.
