The Mon Calamari Firewind-Class Light Cruiser was designed when the older MC-40 Light Cruiser model became obselete. The MC-40, although an excellent cruiser, was frequently taken apart by smaller, faster, more agile warships.
Thus, Mon Calamari Technicians set out to design a smaller cruiser to counter this. The Firewind-Class Light Cruiser is just over half the size of the MC-40, but is just as powerful. Newer, more powerful generators provide more power, allowing for the addition of more weaponry. The Firewind Cruiser has nearly as much firepower as the MC-40, even with it's significantly smaller size.
In early design stages, the Firewind Cruiser carried no hangar bay. However, the Technicians working on the project saw the need for the Firewind to shuttle several fighters into battle, and the bay was expanded. It can now six MC-10 Starfighters. This allows the Firewind to be dispatched on deep space missions, and have a small fighter excort to counter any resistance.
The Firewind Cruiser resembles all other Calamarian designs, with the same smooth organic look, and lumpy outcroppings on the hull that house weapons systems, shield generators and staterooms. Although possessing somewhat of a more common design, the Firewind Cruisers still carry the Calamarian uniqueness, and so no two cruisers are the same.
Unlike some of the larger cruisers, the Firewind-Class Light Cruiser carries only one Command Pod. These resemble the outcroppings that cover the hull, except they are in a more elevated position. The Command Pod on the Firewind Cruiser houses the bridge. On most designs, this is placed roughly 2/3 down the length of the ship, on the topside portion, but owing to Calamari uniqueness, it is possible for it to be located elsewhere.
The Firewind-Class Light Cruiser also features a bank of three powerful Calamari Engines, located just under a dorsal fantail in the rear of the vessel. These engines can propel the ship at speeds of up to 50 MGLT, making the Firewind-Class Light Cruiser an extremely fast and dangerous vessel.
