La Galissonière-class Star Destroyer
Introduction:

“It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to change.” ~Charles Darwin

Change.

The face of the galaxy has changed.

No longer do fleets of the Black Dragon Empire and the Galactic Coalition clash in mass battle. No longer does Simon Kaine lead the nearly unstoppable Imperial war machine. No longer is the Empire at rest, with Rebellions cropping up across its space. No longer is the Confederation an infant subfaction of the Coalition gearing up for war with BDE. But rather, it is a reasonably sized independent government barely singed by galactic war. It has become a fortified haven of peace and freedom.

With the Confederation’s transformation into a more peaceful state, so does that of the nature of the Confederate Military. Funds are increasingly being allocated for potent and cheaper ground defences rather than the expensive, high-tech warships which KDI designed to liberate the Tion Sector. Compounding the problem, there is a wide diversification of warship designs among local defence fleets. Making maintenance and supply a nightmare for large fleet expeditions, as well as making it difficult to train, rotate and promote service personnel across a multitude of ship types. Thus, while a diverse fleet of high-tech warships may look exceptionally effective on paper, it is prohibitively costly for most governments to pursue in addition to its logistical problems. Inspired by the New Republic’s successful response to a similar situation with its New Class modernization program, the Confederation has started its Unity Project.

As ships from the Unity Project are introduced, older vessels will be gradually replaced and their crews put onto their newer, cheaper, and less maintenance-intensive ships (though many service people are retiring as the chance of conflict lessens). Local governments do have the option of overriding this project, but they then must individually pay for extra planetary defences which are becoming standard across Confederation space. Thus far, only Kashan and New Oceanus have rejected the bill, mostly because of their defence resting in concealment as well partially because of the local influence of KDI.

General Ship Overview:

“These ships may well be economic and logistical triumphs, but I would much prefer to face our enemies in the newest wave of KDI’s technological terrors.”
~ Rear Admiral Corise Lucerne, SCO, Confederate Armed Forces

Unity Project ships in general have below average costs, good mobility, a peacetime dual purpose, and excellent armor coverage but lack heavy firepower. Various laborsaving devices and automation reduce crew sizes to cut costs in paying crewmembers and consumables. In addition, Unity ships are designed to accommodate a wide variety of parts to make logistics, upgrading, and repair easier at the cost of battle efficiency. Unity Project ships are built utilizing heavily standardized components for improved logistics, ease of training, and cheaper costs; thus, default components like powercells, engines, weapons, etc are often identical on a smaller ship and a significantly larger ship, though they do vary by amount. Most designs are intentionally simple and designed for mass-production, meaning that if the Confederation was attacked, large numbers of them could be quickly produced and green crews could easily adapt to them for mass fielding. Nearly all Unity ships are based on existing designs and technologies. One technology found on all ships is the Multi-Core Power System and an Anti-concussion Field Generator.

Description: The La Galissonière-class is the new standard ship of line for the Confederation Navy. It is not a completely new design, but rather a reworking by Confederation military engineers of the Nebula-class Star Destroyer; the most frequent line ship within the Confederation before the start of the Unity Project. Like its predecessor, the La Galissonière sports powerful shields, an average complement, and is relatively cheap to produce. However, the parameters for the overall design were different, and thus the La Galissonière has an extremely thick hull capable of absorbing significantly more damage than most ships of its size at the cost of its speed. For its dual role purpose, the ship has been fitted out with Hypermatter Generators, which produce fuel for shipboard reactors, which is then used by the military and sold on the open market. The hypermatter reactors do take up space and power however, which has forced the La Galissonière to carry a weaker array of weapons than most ships its size.

Technical Descriptions

Relative Cost: Moderately Low

Cost: The La Galissonière-class is an exceptionally cheap warship for its size, partially because it’s a downgrade from an already cheap vessel (The Nebula-class), and partially because of the civilian components and Unity Standard weapons.

Speed: Slow

Engines: This is perhaps the La Galissonière’s greatest weakness, being appalling slow at sublight speeds. Even many larger warships are capable of outrunning it. This isn’t because of weak engines, but rather the very heavy armor weighing the ship down. As with other Unity Project ships, the La Galissonière has dedicated maintenance and repair crews composed of LE Repair Droids supervised by human mechanics to repair damages and tune the engines for optimal speed.

Shield Rating: Moderately High

Shields: The La Galissonière is exceptionally well shielded, even more so than the Nebula, but is slightly just less shielded than the MC-90 and later model MC-80s. Like other Confederation warships, it follows Confederation tradition of maintaining redundant, identical back-up shields in case of catastrophic shield failure.

Armor: Very High

Armor: Its thick armor is unquestionably the La Galissonière’s greatest strength. Very few ships of its size has as much protection, and in doing so, the La Galissonière can withstand attacks that would oftentimes destroy larger vessels. Because of the relatively large amount of hypermatter within the ship, Ardanium flecks are found scattered throughout the armor in case of a leak, and to provide additional protection against radiation. Like other Confederate warships, its uses a simplified version of the Electric Reactive armor first employed on the Pegasus-class Star Destroyer. This allows the ship to soak more physical damage than a ship for its size is normally capable of taking.

Weapons: Moderately Low

Weapons: The La Galissonière has roughly only three-fourths the armament of average warship of this size. It’s main battery of energy weapons are rather weak and small in number, which makes the La Galissonière weak in direct power. However, a combination of ion cannon batteries and a quartet of the new Lance Cannon Arrays makes the warship capable of holding its own against comparably sized ships. Unlike its predecessor, the La Galissonière has potent point defences, easily capable of fending off enemy missiles and starfighters.

Complements: Average

Complements: The La Galissonière has an average complement for its size, almost the same as the Nebula, and is primarily geared for space combat with a large starfighter complement. The ground complement is slightly different than that of its predecessor, exchanging some infantry for armored vehicles.

Hypermatter Generators: Situated between the centerline of the vessel and the La Galissonière’s flanks are two Hypermatter Generators. Using technology developed from KDI’s Tachyon Cannons, Hypermatter Generators slow down tachyonic particles and contain the particles through the use of Ardanium and magnetic fields. These Hypermatter particles can then be transferred to other ships through tethers or loaded into special containers. From there, the hypermatter can be used to power reactors and other power supplies. About half of the hypermatter produced by the La Galissonières is used to fuel the Confederate fleet, and the other half is sold on the open market to civilian concerns.

In times of combat, hypermatter is channeled across the ship via Ardanium protected tubes, and can then be vented into space. The venting hypermatter immediately tries to escape into hyperspace, and thus accelerates, causing widespread damage within the immediate vicinity with effects and properties similar to that of KDI’s tachyon cannons. However, because of the lack of cohesiveness, the damage radius is only 150 meters from the La Galissonière, and is fairly weak, only capable of destroying starfighters and warheads. It is an area effect weapon, and thus will destroy both friendly and enemy assets and munitions in the area. A light release of hypermatter can be done every forty five seconds, and will only destroy enemy warheads. A moderate release of hypermatter can be done once every minute, destroying warheads and damaging fighter craft within the area (unless the said fighter craft are unshielded, in which case they are destroyed). Alternatively, a heavy release can be done every two minutes, and will destroy all shielded small craft (shuttles, fighters, escape pods, etc) and munitions within the blast radius. Because of the votality of the hypermatter, flecks of Ardanium are scattered throughout the hull, so that in case of a hypermatter generator breach, the hull can withstand the hypermatter’s release. In addition, if breached, the generators the will automatically vent all remaining hypermatter into space.
