Design History: The first of the original Immobilizer-418, better known simply as the Interdictor, was completed two years before the Battle of Yavin. Since that time, the 418 became the most widely successful interdictor up until this decade, even superceding KDY’s Dominator-class or CEC’s CC-7600. Gravity well technology gradually improved, becoming smaller and more powerful; making the 418 obsolete. Many factions now had other interdictor craft, such as the Constrainer Picket or the Immobilizer 450, that began to replace the Interdictors in their fleets. The Coalition, with the exception of the Azguards, was not among those factions. Previous to its induction into the Confederation, Abhean’s shipyards, formerly owned and operated by Republic Fleet Systems, started developing a new version of the Immobilizer 418 to market to those factions that had not developed a new Interdictor. By the time the project was finished, Abhean had joined the Confederation, and its resources and projects were turned over to the Confederation military. The Confederation then turned over the plans to the rest of the Coalition for the individual governments own production.
Technical Description: The Interdictor Mk II makes use of the same hull of the original Immobilizer Mk I. However, many of the ships components were replaced by their more modern equivalents. Shields were improved by using more efficient shield generators and improved power systems. Following the trend set by the Mon Cal, the Mk II carries back-up shields as well. As well, the Mk II uses a primitive form of the Electric Reactive armor used on many KDI ships; however, this is weaker, only meant to stand up to one full missile volley before being destroyed. The most noticeable change within the vessel are is weapons. Previously, the Immobilizer had been armed with Quad Laser Cannons; very effective against starfighters, but useless against anything larger. The Mk II rectifies this deficiency by replacing the quad laser cannons with Taim & Bak developed Light Turbolasers. While not very powerful weapons, they do have excellent tracking abilities and a high refire rate, making them highly suitable for use on starfighters, warheads, and lighter capital vessels( around Nebulon-B or smaller). The original G7-x projectors developed by SFS were replaced by their newer equivalents, taking up less space and granting a longer range for the interdictor. However, the size of the globes housing the interdictors remains the same because of additional armor placed within the globes for the generators protection.
Role and Deployment: The Interdictor Mk II is expected to be deployed within the Coalition much like its predecessor. Some of the craft will likely be used for surprise custom inspections within Coalition space to deter smugglers and other criminal elements. Otherwise, they will gradually replace the old interdictors within many Coalition fleets, or in cases where there were none to begin with, fill the interdiction role.
