Defender Ion Shields
Ion shields are standard ray shields reconfigured to stop ion cannons. Unfortunatelt this makes them useless against laser cannons, turbolasers or any particle weapon.
The research and developement section of the military base on Farquak Junior decided to reduce the effectiveness of ion cannons. They developed an ion shield that projects outside of the normal ray shields. This can be used in conjunction with normal ray shields and particle shields. To prevent massive power failures, or the reactor going critical, the ion shield is only half the strength of the ships normal ray shield. Galactic Coalition High Command approved the tech, and started building new ships with ion shields and started to add onto the old ships.
NOTE: This is canon, but in canon it takes hours to reconfigure your normal ray shields. Since most ships only have one ray shield generating array, you couldn't have normal and ion ray shields at one time.
Limitations:
Only ships over 100m gets the Defender Ion Shields.
It is equivelent of half of the power of the shi[s normal ray shields.
5 extra days R&D time.
All new ships come with it, the 5 extra day R&D time upgrades the old ships.

20 days(under 400m)
5 Days to upgrade old ships
