Description - Kuat Drive Yards began production of the A-9 Vigilance in 9 ABY. The interceptor was KDY's attempt to enter into the Imperial starfighter market, which had been monopolized by Sienar Fleet Systems and their TIE series of fighters. Though the A-9 had no shields and extremely weak armor, it was fast, and its two laser cannons were more powerful than the four found on the T-65 X-wing, making it a dangerous craft. The A-9's generally attacked in large groups, following the Empire's tactic of quantity over quality. Simple cockpit controls made the A-9 an easy fighter to learn. While faster than the TIE Interceptor, it had a weaker hull due to deliberate design choices made to reduce mass. Thanks to independent power generators, however, the weapons system was quite powerful for a ship of its size.
