I've been hearing a lot of dissenting voices, once loyal to Isaac Brock and his homies, apparently a little disgusted by the seemingly "mainstream" turn the band has taken.

...okay, that was a lie. That is just what my girlfriend says.

But I cannot help but love their new work. These dissenting voices (re: girlfriend) argue that they loved Modest Mouse's hard and rough feel, and that the newer albums seem to lack that feel, instead sounding more studio and top 100. It is usually at this point that I give up arguing my point and we make out, but here is what I would say if I didn't.

Despite any of the alterations to the sound and feel of Modest Mouse, its still Isaac singing about the shit he sings about, and I don't care what the fuck anyone says. That alone can make an album. And maybe I'm just a shallow prick controlled by the music industry, but I cannot help but feel a special love for their new, more "mainstream" sound. I loved old Modest Mouse, but I love new Modest Mouse. I'm not going to play favorites, but We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank is definitely one of my favorite albums by the bastards.

So I advise to you, as the potential buyer/pirater, pick it up and give it a shot. If you're stubborn and unwilling to adapt to a band's change in style, you probably won't like it. But if you love Modest Mouse, and are willing to accept that they're not so much the indie rock band we came to know and love so long ago, but a smarter, better alternative rock band, you'll love the album.

Michael approves.

I think the fact that "Float On" was on a Kidz Bop Cd is the greatest and most terrible thing ever.

Is this their latest?

If so I'll grab it.
