Much deeper than the other Batman movies.
The Joker made the movie though. Simply amazing. One of the best villains ever. Heath Ledger did an absolutely incredible job.

I saw it at the midnite showing - packed house at four theatres.
The movie was considerably more grimm than the comical last two, and was on par with the first one.
I cannot say that Ledger was comparable to Jack Nicholson, but they played to different directors and different movie styles.
A good movie, all in all. Pity Ledger decided to do drugs and thus negate the possibility of a reprise of the role for the next movie to come.
My question is - with the Joker and Two Face gone, what other villains remain? The director wants this to be more realistic and less comical, thus the Penguin, Catgirl, etc are out. The only thing I could see as possibilities are Robin Williams in a serious version of the Riddler and perhaps Patrick Stewart or Anthony Hopkins as Dr Freeze

I don't think it'll be hard for them at all to take something that was originally comical and transform it into something more twisted and sinister and real. They just did it with the Joker. It was already done to an extent with the Penguin. They adapted Scarecrow nicely for Begins. There are any number of villains from the comics that could be refurbished for Nolan's movie style. Ra's. Bane. Black Mask.
My real question is: The Joker was left alive for future appearances. Ledger, however, has passed. Who could possibly take up the role... and who would want to?

nolan intended to leave it open, for the option, but after ledger passed said the joker would no longer appear if he decided to make a third film. which he probably will with the money this movie is going to make.
they already did ra's as a villain.
and ledger overdosed on over the counter sleeping meds.

Heath Ledger as the Joker was a more gripping and terrifying character than I think most of us could ever produce, even with years to write and hone our work. I haven't been so gripped by a film in years, and although people are saying the Joker stole the show, as he himself points out, Batman completes him by providing him the perfect foil for his insanity. The relationship between the two characters as they fought it out for the city basically made the movie, and made it great.

Half of it so far, beyond the first robbery I don't see what all the hype is about. Suppose Ill have to finish it... Just finished it, still like the old Joker. The new Two Face was awesome though.
