We're all nerds here, right?
Which means it's odds on that at one time or another in your life, you played Dungeons and Dragons, or you played Knights of the Old Republic, or you saw/read Lord of the Rings. Or heck, you saw Star Wars (If you haven't you can stop reading now). As such, you're probably familiar with the concept of an "Adventuring party".
Imagine if TRF was an adventure game of some kind, or was adapted to film, or perhaps a novel - what characters would you use to assemble the main cast?
Notable here is that these characters shouldn't be the big movers and shakers. Simon Kaine, Regrad, Grevious, Lupercus, Brutus Nogoth, they're all more likely to serve as boss characters or quest-givers of some kind, as they're all too important and responsible for too much to let everything drop and go adventuring. "The Player", so to speak, would certainly encounter them, but they wouldn't join the party.
So tell me, just who would you put in your ideal Rebel Faction adventuring party?
Personally I'd split them into two groups, Force-users and Non-Force-users, because you need some of both.
For Force Users, I'd strongly favour bringing either Ahnk or Gash. Ahnk has the advantage of being alive, but that's rarely stopped Gash or a truly determined RPG character. They represent the darker, more cynical, world-weary side of the Force and add depth to a usually two-dimensional philosophy. Some might say their time has passed, but in their zenith both of these guys were true adventuring heroes/villains of TRF, and could fill that "old mentor role" pretty easily.
Also for Forcers, Irtar and Zark would each make good choices. Irtar is an excellent all-around Jedi character who fits well into the grittier TRF setting - if this was a Bioware RPG, he would be the second-in-command dude, the Carth if you will. Zark, on the other hand, is quirky, and in combination with Gash and Ahnk helps enforce the impression that "Here at TRF we do things differently". Significantly, they're both prone to becoming wandering adventurers as it is, and if TRF ever forms an actual adventuring party (to overthrow a powerful tyrant, for example) it will likely include one or both of these.
Dolash and Natalie Vinda might make good additions to the party depending on what you're going for. Having too many Force users in the group can overshadow the other members, but if you want a lighter and more clear-cut adventuring group Dolash could possibly take Ahnk/Gash's place as a more traditional wise old dude. Natalie Vinda, for some reason, gives me that "Spunky princess" vibe where her father's super rich but she becomes a heroic adventurer by circumstance anyways.
It might be harder to find Forcers on the evil/darker neutral side, as TRF's Sith are either very highly ranked or subject to a high rate of turnover. Skygge might work as an evil counterpart to Natalie, and if we're really pressed we could revive a Big Bad like Maim. This might actually work well, as reviving a long-past great evil could require them to linger around the party for a while, even if their morality or goals differ. If anyone could reccomend some classic bad Forcers, they could go here.
*Non-Force-Users*
Every adventuring party set in Star Wars needs a Bounty Hunter, it's just a law. Recently, the Mandalorians have become more popular too, so why not broadly fill both at once and draft Beff Pike? He's the most notorious bounty hunter in the galaxy, he's more or less a drifter, and his mixed ideals of honour and fighting for money make him easy to work into any story or adventure. An all around essential choice.
You also need a wry and caustic wit. Someone to observe and write down your adventures - someone closer to an everyman. You need Viryn Quell. Yes, he doesn't fight, and it'd be hard to explain away why he'd join a team of TRF's most powerful on a daring mission of doom, but he's just such a notable vagabond that any TRF story should include him.
Droids are also an essential, although TRF has less of them. Smarts the droid might work, although he's more of a thinker than a combat adventurer, and might be more of an ally of the party than the guy flying around doing the fighting. I remember there was a C-10 Sith Hunter guy a while ago, but I don't remember the specifics. Could he be this role? Or maybe Miette, Viryn's android assistant? Unlikely, since she too is noncombat. If anyone knows a good droid to reccomend...
Now we need some toughs, some commando types. Wes Vos and Corise Lucerne are both good choices for this - both are good fighters in their own right, and though both have rank enough to be considered for high profile missions (like, presumably, this one) they're also not so highly ranked as to be above field duty. Again, think Carth from KOTOR. Even better, both are somewhat more tolerant and flexible than most of the more extremist types at TRF, and could be convinced to work with usual enemies if the cause was right.
As for sneaky spies, well, one hardly gets sneakier or spy-y-er than Omnae's famous Cicero. Cicero has the added benefit of frequently going rogue and having mixed morals, while still being an incredibly effective secret agent. Could be great for adding complex levels to any Empire plot. On the other hand, a more esoteric spy might be from the Union, like Tir Esias. A fanatic who lives through many hivemind-connected clones? Interesting, and deadly.
There are other heroes and villains of TRF left off here, but I encourage you to list your own reccomendations and suggest archetypes that could be filled by TRFers. Just who would you take on an adventure?
